For many years, Black Americans have been leaders in the Greco Roman movement here in the United States. Rodney Smith an Olympic bronze medalist, Harry Lester, a world bronze medalist, and Dremiel Byers a world champion, as well as silver and bronze medalist, have led a strong contingent of athletes who continue to shine on the national and international stage. The World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) provides military athletes the opportunity to become soldiers and continue their careers as international wrestlers. It’s with great pride that the leaders of the team have been strong Black Americans who represent our country to the highest degree.
Presently, the Army wrestling team has Shon Lewis as their head freestyle and Greco roman team coach. Shon, a former Greco world team member, national champ, and medalist, has continued to develop athletes who vie for world medals on a yearly basis. In years prior to Shon, Black Americans Derrick Waldroup and Anthony “Tony” Thomas have built a system that produces world team members on an annual basis. The trail of Black-American Army world team members goes back into the early 80’s. Presently, Spenser Mango, Ellis Coleman, and Harry Lester lead the Army team. All three of these athletes are annual threats to win world medals. Each year, the Army team wins the Armed Forces team title in both styles and represent the USA in the CISM Games which is a world competition for athletes serving in the military around the world. It’s with great pride and admiration that I commend the athletes on the Army wrestling team for their continued success both nationally and internationally!
