Jasmine Bailey Bio
In Carver Hawkeye Arena, the Eastern Iowa Wrestling Club is practicing. The athletes all train with a tough-minded hard working Iowa style but one prepares for practice by putting in a ponytail. She is Jasmine Bailey and she is one of the top young female wrestlers in the country. During the two hour practice at EIWC, Jasmine switches from partner to partner. Coaches Terry Brands, James Kelly and Joe Slaton challenge her and take advantage of her focus and diligence to achieve high level performance.
Jasmine is a 9-time USA Wrestling age group All-American and is Iowa’s first two time Women’s Junior Folkstyle National Champion. She has also won USGWA Nationals and earned bronze at the FILA Cadet Pan Am Championships. Jasmine just completed her Senior year and was a four time varsity letterwinner for Iowa City West High. Iowa City West is led by former Iowa Hawkeye Mark Reiland. West High has been considered one of the top high school teams in the country.
In addition to wrestling, Jasmine is also an honor student, active in yoga, an artist, a rock-climber, a talented country line dancer and an accomplished Judo player.
Next year Jasmine will be attending McKendree University to study Biology and wrestle. With her determination, hard work and lofty Olympic goals you will be hearing her name more in the future.
When/how I got started:
Being the younger sibling of a wrestler and a Dad who helped coach the kids wrestling club meant I attended lots of practices from a young age. Occasionally I would ask if I could practice or compete but not too often. I tried lots of sports: Softball, Basketball, Dance, etc. and was good at all of them but nothing seemed to “stick”. At about ten, I started Judo at the University of Iowa. Within a few months I won several regional and national tournaments. I competed nationally and internationally the next couple years and in 7th grade, I decided to join my junior high wrestling team to cross-train. With my natural style and growing opportunities for females, wrestling became my sport.
