So it’s not the shortest read in the world but I certainly hope it’s worth your time and gives you something to think about.

The Seven Steps to Wrestling Success

The mental realm of wrestling is located located just above the shoulders and mostly in-between the ears but it’s roughly the size of the known universe. Truth be known, like awesome wrestlers, the “mental realm” is a difficult one to pin down due its extraordinary size, shape and skill.

Via involvement in the world’s oldest and greatest sport for long time, I’ve come to believe most of the keys to world class wrestling might have more to do with the mind and less to do with the moves.

Yes, moves matter – but perhaps not as much as we think. “Work smarter not harder” is signage being hung in many wrestling rooms across the land today, and perhaps the best example of this we know is at the end of this article.

This is why I believe the future of wrestling belongs to those who respect and actually apply the tools and techniques that not only bring to life the Mental Realm but optimize it as well.

In a round robin tournament, I believe the Mental Realm could probably tech fall the Technical and Physical realms with 50,000,000 brain cells tied behind its back.

Here’s why I believe the Mental Realm is so potent. Be forewarned though, it gets funky as Askren.

In order for a thought to actually evolve into an action, it must first pass through the Mental Realm.

You might agree with the world of psychology that Thought precedes Action now and forever.

Below is a tiny snapshot of something learned from journeying through the Mental Realm and something that might sound a bit strange, but perhaps ought be a consideration if wanting to optimize your wrestling game.

Have you ever heard the statement – “Thoughts are things”?

Think about that for a moment.

It’s saying, “thoughts” perhaps aren’t merely the invisible, inept and powerless ‘non-things’ we might perceive them to be.

They’ve actually been proven to have energy and vibration – and the power to affect reality. Furthermore, although invisible to the human eye, thoughts fly through air much the same as a football, frisbee or back-suplay.

As it is, we each have roughly 50,000-70,000 thoughts per day – about 48 per minute. Although we act on a very select few, in the realm of cognition, the egg (thought) came first, and the chicken (action) second.

Bi-Cycles

Moreover, like many people, places and things not all thoughts always complete the cycle.

Seems some thoughts simply fail to materialize.

Could be for any reason. Some because of sheer volume, as many thoughts are fleeting, meaningless, zany, or simply a lack general interest by the thinker.

Others, even if truly valuable, rational and promising sometimes don’t come to fruition due a lack nurturing and proper care. Developing a thought is somewhat like developing a wrestler – it takes a fair amount of time, energy and focus.

On the brighter side, if a thought, like people is cared for properly and completes its cycle ergo comes to fruition, it will happily and automatically transform into something totally alive, productive and successful.

The Life of a Thought

The simple life of a thought seems to have a precise path of evolution.

Let’s examine…

The moment a “thought” is thought, it instantly transforms to a ‘vision’.

Test.

Think about a pink elephant. Did you see him running in the picture frame yet?

The mind actually works best and most often in pictures. Why? Because it’s super smart, and incredibly effective and efficient.

A picture is worth…?

Next, that involuntary “vision” gets perfectly projected on what’s called the theater of your mind, and produces what is called a “feeling” or “emotion.” This feeling also involuntary occurs whether we want it or not.

Then, at the subatomic level (invisibly small) that single “emotion” causes an involuntary reaction throughout our body and mind. This phenomenon is termed “vibration.” Vibrations in the game of wrestling and life can be like Messi in soccer – a very key player.

At the end of the day, all those thoughts get registered and actually “weighed in” just before joining the others in the infinitely large and ever-expanding gymnasium in your mind.

Then, that vibration or sometime referred to as “frequency” of that thought attracts people, places and things that are similar, ergo in the nut-shell of all nut-shells, it sort of creates our reality/experience.

Given all that, it stands to reason the overall quality of our wrestling actually somewhat heavily depends on the quality of “thoughts” including our coaches and parents.

So if that be the case, the Mental Realm actually creates and controls the other two. Now that’s some serious power, and the reason we might consider looking deeper into the Mental Realm as it pertains to the awesome sport of wrestling.

Coaching

Coaches have lots of thoughts. So do their athletes. Many of them are passed down from coach to athlete. Moreover, coaches have lots of things to think about so they’re always looking for ways to make their coaching more effective and efficient.

The next time you see a well lit athlete, try following the power cord to the Coach he’s plugged into.

At the end of the cord, standing right before you will be a very effective and efficient light source, one that’s super bright and oft thinks in the seed yet outside the box.

He is usually quite awesome at finding a better way, and is ALWAYS trying to become more effective and efficient with his coaching methods. That’s his # 1 priority and the one constant top-shelf coaches possess no matter the sport.

Words

Words are quite powerful too, especially when coming from an authority figure such as a coach or parent.

We will go deeper into the World of Words in another post, but for now let’s take a quick peek how we can use a “thought”, expressed as “words” that hopefully get nurtured and put into “action” to create instant, dramatic and permanent change for the better.

Below is a uniquely simple and subtle, yet extraordinarily potent and powerful way a coach can help make to every athlete, coach and parent on his team significantly better.

Simplification is often the key to winning at anything and everything. Making things simpler for your team, sons and daughters is a fine idea and often brings results beyond compare.

Teams who make this one change instantly, easily and dramatically increase their entire team’s speed of progress. It’s difficult to beat a single change that speeds up everything.

Furthermore, because of it’s inherent simplification due the aforementioned unification process, oceans more information from the coach’s mouth actually gets in the athlete’s head and sticks. That too is powerful.

Without further ado, here they are for your convenience and hopeful benefit.

The Seven Steps of Wrestling Success

1. The Inside Step: double-leg/high crotch
2. The Outside Step: duck-under/high crotch
3. The Side Step: lateral movement to create angle change
4. The Slide Step: motion follows Side Step but toe stays connected to mat
5. The Hook Step: as in a sweep single
6. The Hesitation Step: holding pattern to create reaction
7. The Jam Step: upper body as in head-locks, body-locks and arm throws

That’s it. Simple as pie but potent as the Big Bang.
