Houston Hero 10.07.13 (day before my Birthday)
My new Houston Hero is not really a person but an organization–Victory Wrestling Challenge.
Victory Wrestling Challenge will conduct their inaugural event on Nov 22, 2013. Elite wrestlers competing in Freestyle and Greco Roman. This may be a great addition to what our sport needs to create and build excitement. This will give our elite wrestlers that want to keep lacing up the old wrestling shoes an outlet to compete and gain financially. I have often said I thought it would be great if we could develop a few teams of elite wrestlers, maybe by region of the USA and put on competitions once a month or so. Then develop a reality show that follows these athletes in their day to day training and ordinary struggles that come their way just like every other person out there. This could give a glimpse as to how these elite athletes overcome obstacles. Adapt, adjust and overcome is not just a witty saying but a way of life for the wrestlers that compete at this level. The show may go a long way to show just how hard wrestlers train and how obstacles are things that everybody must deal with. It’s just some have better tools for doing it than others.
Let’s face it, with MMA gaining so much in popularity I think this would be a great way to have the wrestlers that want to transition into MMA compete in wrestling while they work on their MMA skills. Or maybe they just want to continue competing in wrestling. Either way this may be a key ingredient in growing the fan base for wrestling. This could be a great way for MMA gyms and wrestlers to bring attention and focus to their brand and themselves also. How long does it typically take a wrestler to train for their first MMA fight? Why not fill that time with additional competition and possibly gain financially as well. In the meantime Victory Wrestling Challenge could be supplying a deep desire for wrestling fans to continue to follow their favorite wrestlers beyond college and International competition.
One thing is for sure, in order for wrestling to make it back into the Olympics as a core sport beyond 2014 we must make events like this a huge success. Please follow their Facebook page and share it on your timeline. Share the information that they put out on any social media. Attend their events when possible. Every single thing that you can do to make events like this successful will go a long way when the IOC once again takes up the vote to allow wrestling to stay in the Olympics or not, or to regain its rightful spot as a core sport.
